Warner Norcross + Judd LLP partner John V. Byl has been elected as a Fellow to the American College of Environmental Lawyers, or ACOEL.
To qualify for membership, a lawyer must be actively engaged in environmental legal work or the teaching of environmental law, have at least 15 years of substantial experience in environmental law and have spent 50% of their professional time in the area of environmental law for the past five years. Fellows are dedicated to maintaining and improving the ethical practice of environmental law, the administration of justice and the development of environmental law at both the state and federal level.
Byl was one of 22 new Fellows elected in 2021, and the only one from Michigan. ACOEL president Mary Ellen Ternes said the new Fellows “represent the best environmental lawyers in government service, public interest, academia, and private practice from across the country. Our new Fellows have earned this recognition based on their career achievements and as leaders in the broad and diverse areas of environmental law and policy.”
A longtime environmental and economic incentives lawyer, Byl has helped clients bring countless redevelopment projects, compliance issues and other matters to successful conclusion. His extensive work in the environmental area includes drafting brownfield and environmental cleanup laws in use in Michigan today.
Byl is a frequent lecturer on a wide variety of environmental and economic incentive topics at state bar-related functions, state and local chamber activities, trade association meetings, privately sponsored seminars and other business group functions. He has written numerous articles about environmental and economic incentive statutory and regulatory developments, as well as authored or edited chapters of several environmental books and other works. He serves as outside environmental counsel for Amway, Wolverine Worldwide and others.
Byl is recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America® in environmental law and listed in The International Who’s Who of Environmental Lawyers. He is a Michigan Super Lawyer and was recognized as Grand Rapids Magazine’s 2019-20 Top Lawyer in environmental law.
Byl is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and Grand Rapids Bar Association.
