The European Commission recently approved the new EU-U.S. Privacy Shield to replace the invalidated Safe Harbor program with a new data transfer mechanism. Many U.S. companies with EU operations transfer personal data out of the EU, often relying on the old Safe Harbor program as the mechanism for making these transfers legal.
