James L. Liggins Jr., senior counsel with Warner Norcross + Judd LLP, was named the 2021 recipient of the George N. Bashara Jr. Distinguished Alumni Award from the Michigan State University College of Law Alumni Association.
The prestigious award recognizes alumni with distinguished service in their field and whose personal achievements, involvement in alumni affairs and service to the college enhance its reputation. Up to four outstanding alumni from MSU Law’s more than 11,000 alumni are recognized with the honor each year.
Liggins was the only 2021 honoree. He was recently recognized at the MSU Law Alumni Awards ceremony with the 2022 recipients. The ceremony was not held in 2021 due to COVID-19.
The nomination noted Liggins’ dedication to the college and the Kalamazoo community, highlighting his engagement in recruiting Kalamazoo area individuals to attend MSU’s College of Law and his efforts to make Kalamazoo a destination for graduates.
Liggins focuses his practice in law on litigation and dispute resolution with extensive experience in construction litigation, property disputes, real estate concerns, as well as business contractual disputes, criminal defense and emergency manager matters.
He is a member of the American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Illinois and Indiana state bar associations and the State Bar of Michigan. He is also a past board member of the Kalamazoo County Bar Association and co-founder and past president of the Judge Charles A. Pratt Bar Association. He was named a Rising Star by Michigan Super Lawyers Magazine in 2013.
Liggins is heavily involved in the Kalamazoo community, melding his profession and passion for his community together. He serves on boards for the Harold and Grace Upjohn Foundation, Bronson Healthcare Group and United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region. He is also the chair of Kalamazoo Defender, Kalamazoo’s indigent defense organization.
