Warner Norcross + Judd LLP announced the winners of the 20th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest.

Open to all sixth graders in the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, the contest encourages students to identify and react to a social justice issue that is meaningful to them. The contest allows submissions in the form of essays, poems, stop-action videos, songs, drawings, PowerPoint presentations and more.

Isaac Rizkalla, Blandford School – first place for “<a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DJUeUEPBn-bXxW6m3nHWlnn5nEGfqEdY6Eg7SYJRrM4/edit?tab=t.0">The Torch</a>,” a poem symbolizing his privilege and how it’s not only a gift but a call to action to advocate for justice and equity.

Annalynn Pido, Grand Rapids Montessori – second place for her song “<a href="https://sites.google.com/students.grps.org/2024-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-/set-10?,">For Us to Get Along</a>” dedicated to Dr. King, focusing on the American experience and all the pain and hardships people have endured throughout history. She also included a colorful drawing representing her emotions, goals and interests.

Karis Davis, Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy – third place for “<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ssMSzr65qVj1gzqBLK8GuZSJ6BAXMxxa/view">Why Should I?</a>” a video essay reflecting on police brutality against people of color. Her submission included a drawing of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old Black youth who was fatally shot by a white man.

An additional 46 students received honorable mentions. They attend Aberdeen Academy, Blandford School, Center for Economicology, Dickinson Academy, Grand Rapids Montessori Academy, Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy, Harrison Park Academy, Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy, North Park Montessori Academy, Ridgemoor Park Academy, Riverside Middle School and Westwood Middle School.&nbsp;

The goal of the contest is to encourage students to think about how King’s legacy of peace and justice applies to the world in which they live. The submissions were evaluated by 50 Warner firm members based on connection to the contest theme, message and overall impact.

All winning and honorable mention students and their parents are invited to attend the 39th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Commemoration Jan. 20 at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St. NE.

The winners and their families received two tickets to see “Hamilton” compliments of Broadway Grand Rapids’ Broadway Arts Access initiative. The first-place winner of this year’s competition received an Apple iPad, the second-place winner received an Amazon Fire Tablet and the third-place winner received a $100 gift card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop.

Each student who earned an honorable mention will receive a $25 gift card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop. All other participants will receive a personalized certificate of completion.
