Michigan House Bill 5766 was signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on June 11, 2020. Under this new law, the deadline for filing an appeal of real property taxes for 2020 has been extended to August 31, 2020. Owners of commercial and industrial properties may file an appeal directly with the Michigan Tax Tribunal (MTT) by August 31, 2020. Owners of residential and agricultural property must still appear at the local board of review, normally held in March, prior to filing an appeal with the MTT. Residential and agricultural property owners who did not appear at the 2020 March Board of Review still have another opportunity to appear at the 2020 July Board of Review as set forth in the Governor’s recent Executive Order 2020-87 as well as the State Tax Commission’s June 9, 2020 Memorandum.
