2024 has been a busy year full of significant changes on the human resources front for Michigan employers. American Society of Employers, Michigan’s trusted partner for everything HR, will host an Employment Law Briefing at the GVSU Innovation Hub on Sept. 24 to discuss the changes.

Robert Dubault, executive partner of Warner Norcross + Judd LLP’s Muskegon office, will provide the event’s keynote address and firm Partner DeAndre' Harris will lead an afternoon session, “What does it mean to harass?”

Dubault’s address will cover the latest legislative activities and court cases and offer insights into compliance strategies. He’ll also discuss how upcoming elections could affect both federal and state laws impacting businesses.

In the overview of his remarks, Dubault notes recent rulings on issues including abortion medication, religious accommodations in the workplace, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEO) charge requirements and the reach of administrative courts. He adds that the Michigan Supreme Court recently reinstated both the Earned Sick Time Act and the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act, which are particularly impactful for employers, and says there are at least 16 other employment laws that might be passed before the end of the year.

In his presentation, Harris will discuss the EEOC’s new guidance on harassment and broadened definition of what it means to be harassed. He will review various scenarios that could lead to harassment and violations of equal opportunity laws and provide suggested ways to avoid these situations in the workplace.
