As a child, I could spend hours in my room, completely absorbed in creating intricate structures with Construx building toys. Even then, I had a unique knack for diving into complex challenges, breaking them down and finding clarity amidst the details. The harder the puzzle, the more determined and focused I became. Today, that same engineering mindset fuels my approach to designing cutting edge retirement, health and welfare plans. Brett’s first career was as a Certified Public Accountant, performing audits and conducting full assessments of business clients’ financial positions. As a CPA, Brett was deeply involved in the inner workings of his clients’ businesses, reviewing financial statements, evaluating internal controls and analyzing operational efficiencies. This experience gave him a comprehensive understanding of business structures and financial health, which now enhances his legal practice in employee benefits.

Brett also served as director of administration and director of compliance for a major third-party retirement administrator, where he led a team of 50 professionals handling nondiscrimination testing, federal filings, plan design and pre-client plan review for over 2,000 retirement plan clients. His role required a deep understanding of complex regulations to keep employer plans compliant, and he continuously monitored changes in statutes to proactively address compliance issues. Brett also managed high-stakes client interactions with the IRS during compliance audits and fostered collaborative relationships with attorneys involved in Department of Labor investigations.

Brett earned his Juris Doctor from Michigan State University. He holds a Master of Accountancy in audit and controls and dual Bachelor of Science degrees in both accounting and finance from the University of Tennessee.
