Warner Norcross & Judd LLP announced the results of its Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest.
The contest, which was open to all sixth-grade students within Grand Rapids Public Schools, challenged the students to write an essay on one of four topics designed to encourage students to think about how Dr. King's legacy of peace and justice applies to the world in which they live.
A record 325 essays were submitted for this year’s contest. Winners included:
Alexus Green, Riverside Middle School, grand prize
Malikah Brown, Grand Rapids Montessori, first runner up
Deion Hurt, Harrison Middle School, second runner up
Devontae Hines, Westwood Middle School, second runner up
Additionally, 19 students received an honorable mention.
Winning students received either a savings bond and/or a gift certificate to a local bookstore. Essays were judged by Warner Norcross attorney and staff and community members on originality, clarity, organization and knowledge of Dr. King and his work in the civil rights movement.
